Foodista – Wikipedia for Foodies

A friend passed along a great site today: Foodista.

In the site founders’ own words:

Better Organization

We make it easy to find, share and learn about food and cooking. We’re the first website to organize cooking information into four linked categories:

  • Recipes: Combinations of ingredients.
  • Foods: The most basic of ingredients. Either as they are produced naturally, such as apples and eggs, or with minimal processing, such as salt or flour.

  • Cooking Techniques: Methods of preparing foods, such as baking, boiling, slicing, and braising.
  • Kitchen Tools: All the gadgets, appliances, and equipment you use to make meals, including saucepan, chef’s knife, blender, and cutting board.

I look forward to watching this resource grow and to contributing a few of my recipes along the way.

Check it out!

When selecting and collecting kitchen tools, be cautious.

It is hard to emphasize the usefulness of GOOD kitchen tools for cooking. Without them, cooking is a chore and a cook quickly loses interest in the kitchen. In fact, I devoted a full chapter to this subject: Kitchen Tools to Keep, Kitchen Tools to Trash in my new book (Nov/08):

Tried and True Recipes from a Caterer’s Kitchen—Secrets of Making Great Foods

I found this site to be not well-laid out and prone to pranksters… the hummus had urine as an ingredient and the pizza suggested “cigarette butts” as toppings :(

FROM RECIPE PLAY: Yes, I see what you mean. I think, as its a new site, the hope is that it will become better regulated, like wikipedia, and that these types of poorly chosen pranks will decrease over time.

For instance, it looks as though the hummus recipe has been fixed already, and there is a note in the comments about the site administrators both fixing it, and indicating how users can avoid this type of vandalism.

In any case, thanks for the thoughts on it. I’ll continue to support it.

    Cheers,
    Will
